"Historic Feldman's Department Store"
Turns 100 Years Old

January 2011 — This year, 2011, the Historic Feldman's Department Store, aka Teal Professional Building in downtown Haleyville (Winston County's only privately-owned building to be officially registered with the Alabama and National Historical Commissions) turned 100 years old.

Built for John Dodd in 1911, it was purchased and operated as a department store for two generations by the Feldman family, then purchased, renovated and officially registered as a historic landmark by Dr. Joe and Judy Teal.

This year the Teals are planning to have a birthday celebration for the building that will include the City of Haleyville, Winston County, the Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Merchants Association, Haleyville Historical Society, Winston County Genealogical Society, several Jewish and outside historical organizations and others, and be open to the public.

Since it is uncertain exactly when in 1911 the building was built, the Teals are expecting to celebrate this occasion in September, the month (of different years respectively) that they purchased the property, had it officially registered with the Alabama Historical Commission, and then were notified that it had also been officially registered with the National Historical Commission.

More information will be provided on this as plans progress.

MANY PEOPLE.
ONE COUNTY.
WE ARE WINSTON!

Who was Aunt Jenny Johnston? Or Andrew Jackson Ingle for that matter? What is the "free state?" All of these questions and more are answered in the new book from the Winston County Genealogical Society, published March 2010. First in a series, and more than two hundred pages, Winston Roots, Vol. 1: Stories of an Alabama County contains remarkable and historical happenings of Winston County during its many stages, even preceding statehood. It is a delightful retrospective on the discovery of Clear Creek Falls, the first permanent settlement, Byler and Cheatham Roads, early settlers, Revolutionary War soldiers, the organization of Hancock County, the renaming to Winston, the Civil War, Alabama’s oldest log jail, early mills, and many more all the way into the twentieth century. There is also an appendix of historical notes on nearly thirty towns and communities, some now called “dead towns.” Order your copy today! The book is at the printers and should be available for purchase within the next two weeks. Then they can be purchased at the Winston County Archives in Double Springs Monday and Tuesday of each week, or you can mail a check or money order to the Winston County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 112, Double Springs, AL 35553.
